In a major push to strengthen India's fast-growing creative economy and encourage authentic digital storytelling, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has launched the pilot phase of the 'Gems of India' Challenge, a nationwide initiative aimed at discovering, nurturing and promoting grassroots digital creators from across the country. The programme seeks to provide local storytellers with a national platform to showcase the unique culture, traditions, history, tourism and achievements of their respective districts through short-form digital content.
The challenge forms part of the government's broader vision to strengthen India's Orange Economy, the sector driven by creativity, culture, media and intellectual property—and leverages the MyWAVES platform hosted on the WAVES OTT ecosystem to connect aspiring creators with wider audiences. By encouraging user-generated content rooted in local identities, the initiative aims to celebrate India's immense cultural diversity while opening new opportunities for digital talent beyond metropolitan centres.
A Platform for India's Untold Stories
Announcing the initiative, the Ministry said every district in India possesses stories that deserve greater visibility. The challenge is designed to empower creators to document and present these stories in engaging digital formats, thereby preserving local heritage while making it accessible to audiences across the country.
Speaking at the launch, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar said the programme is as much about celebrating the creativity of India's youth as it is about showcasing the extraordinary diversity of the nation's districts.
According to the Ministry, participants are encouraged to produce authentic stories centred on their districts' cultural heritage, traditional practices, historical landmarks, tourism potential, local innovations and community achievements. The initiative aims to create a vibrant ecosystem of creators who can become digital ambassadors for their regions.
Pilot Phase Opens in August
The pilot phase of the Gems of India Challenge was officially launched on July 21, 2026, while submissions will be accepted between August 1 and August 31, 2026.
Participants are required to submit one to three-minute videos through the MyWAVES section available on the WAVES OTT platform. The short-video format has been chosen to make participation simple and accessible while encouraging concise, impactful storytelling suited to contemporary digital audiences.
The Ministry believes that short-form digital content has emerged as one of the most influential mediums for cultural expression and community engagement. By providing a structured platform, the challenge seeks to identify talented creators who can produce compelling narratives rooted in authenticity rather than commercial trends.
Strengthening India's Orange Economy
The initiative aligns with the government's broader efforts to develop India's creative industries into significant contributors to economic growth and employment.
Often referred to as the Orange Economy, the creative sector encompasses industries such as digital media, filmmaking, design, music, publishing, animation, gaming and content creation. With India's rapidly expanding digital ecosystem and increasing smartphone penetration, the government sees grassroots creators as important drivers of cultural preservation as well as economic opportunity.
Officials believe empowering creators from smaller towns, villages and remote regions can diversify the country's digital content landscape, ensuring that local narratives receive national and even global visibility.
Rather than concentrating opportunities among established influencers or urban creators, the challenge seeks to democratise digital storytelling by giving equal prominence to voices from every district.
Showcasing India's Cultural Diversity
One of the central objectives of the initiative is to encourage creators to highlight aspects of their districts that often remain underrepresented in mainstream media.
Participants can focus on a wide range of themes, including:
-
Cultural traditions and festivals
-
Historical monuments and heritage sites
-
Indigenous art forms and crafts
-
Local cuisine
-
Tourism destinations
-
Inspirational personalities
-
Community initiatives
-
Unique natural landscapes
-
Traditional occupations and livelihoods
-
Success stories that reflect the identity of their district
Through these narratives, the government hopes to create a rich digital archive celebrating India's cultural and geographical diversity while promoting regional tourism and local pride.
MyWAVES at the Centre of the Initiative
The challenge is being hosted on MyWAVES, the user-generated content platform integrated into the WAVES OTT ecosystem.
MyWAVES has been positioned as a space where creators can share original content reflecting India's diverse cultural landscape. The platform now becomes the foundation of the Gems of India Challenge, enabling participants from across the country to upload and showcase their work in a structured national competition.
Officials believe the platform can help bridge the gap between talented grassroots creators and larger audiences by providing visibility, recognition and opportunities for emerging storytellers.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands Among Pilot Regions
As part of the pilot rollout, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been selected to participate in the first phase of the initiative.
Officials in the Union Territory said the programme presents a valuable opportunity to showcase the islands' rich cultural traditions, biodiversity, tourism attractions and historical significance through authentic digital storytelling.
The inclusion of the islands highlights the government's intention to ensure representation from geographically diverse regions, including remote territories that possess unique cultural identities and stories rarely seen in mainstream digital content.
Encouraging Inclusive Digital Participation
The Gems of India Challenge also reflects the government's broader emphasis on expanding digital participation across India.
By inviting citizens from every district to contribute stories from their own communities, the initiative seeks to make content creation more inclusive and community-driven. Rather than relying solely on professional production houses, the programme encourages ordinary citizens, students, young creators and local storytellers to become chroniclers of their regions.
Officials believe such initiatives can strengthen local identity while simultaneously creating pathways for emerging creators to build careers in India's expanding digital media ecosystem.
A Step Towards India's Creative Future
With digital content consumption continuing to surge across the country, the launch of the Gems of India Challenge marks another step in the government's efforts to position creativity as an important pillar of economic development.
By combining technology, storytelling and cultural preservation, the initiative aims to uncover hidden stories from every corner of India while creating opportunities for a new generation of creators. Through authentic narratives rooted in local experiences, the challenge aspires to celebrate India's diversity, strengthen the creative economy and ensure that every district has the opportunity to tell its story on a national platform.
