Mumbai! The city of dreams. Every man has their own piece of dreams, their own paradise they struggle for. And to achieve them people come to Mumbai, the place that has everything. And to one’s surprise, people not only from other states but also from other countries get attracted by Mumbai.
From 1950 to 2020, the city's population has increased tremendously. Mumbai saw the lives of 3 million people in 1950. And by 2020 it had reached an estimated number of 20 million, making it the 9th most populated city in the world. And that’s not over, studies predict more growth in the upcoming years.
Now what is actually the reason behind this? What does Mumbai have that so many people just migrate here? Is their struggle even worth it?
Employment
Mumbai being the Financial Capital of India, people come here to seek jobs. Headquarters of various institutions such as the Bombay Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange, Reserve Bank of India, Tata Group, Aditya Birla Group, and Reliance Industries are situated here. MNCs like Walt Disney, Deloitte, and Johnson & Johnson are too situated here.
Mumbai has one of the largest dockyards that demand a lot of skilled and unskilled manpower. Also, the construction in Mumbai never stops, may it be for roads, offices, or residential buildings which again calls for a huge amount of workers.
Education
Students across the globe wish to receive the best education so that they can excel in life. For this very reason, children from rural parts of India migrate to urban cities like Mumbai.
This city alone has more than 16 universities, 800 colleges, and over 4,000 schools. Institutes for specialized courses such as IIT Bombay, Institute of Chemical Technology, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, etc are also available.
Healthcare
The city has more hospitals, nursing homes, and dispensaries than any other urban area in India. There are nearly 16 municipal general hospitals that treat people at nominal rates.
Hub of Art
Bollywood, earlier known as Bombay Cinema, is one of the biggest examples of where artists can express themselves.
Also, Mumbai spreads a stage for dance and music at various competitions, ceremonies, and festivals. People also often engage in local theatres.
Travel
From the glowing Queens Necklace at night to the bells at the Siddhivinayak temple in the morning, Mumbai is full of places to spend quality time, creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.
May it be ancient architecture like Gateway of India or modern amusement parks like Essel World, Biodiversity reserves such as Sanjay Gandhi National Park, or shopping on the streets at Colaba Causeway, Mumbai has it all.
It’s an irony, how the city of dreams is also called the city that never sleeps. It might be because people come here with their dreams and work endlessly, day and night to fulfill them. Mumbai provides opportunities that everyone wants to grab. After all, who doesn’t want a better standard of living?
