On Tuesday, the first group of about 2600 naval Agniveers, including 272 women, graduated from an Indian Navy training facility in Odisha, putting into motion the four-year army recruiting program that the Narendra Modi government had unveiled the previous year. At INS Chilka, under the auspices of Southern Naval Command, up to 2,585 Agniveers of the Indian Navy graduated in a ceremony that was a first of its type.
All three services have recruited Agniveers, but only the naval troops have successfully finished the 16-week training program.
Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, who reviewed the parade, said in a statement, “This day is historic also because we have the first ever batch of women sailors passing out. As the nation watches, our women sailors will provide inspiration to an entire generation of young women in the country.”
