United Airlines flight drops 28,000 feet in 10 minutes, returns to Newark Airport

A United Airlines flight scheduled from Newark to Rome on the evening of September 14, 2023, faced a harrowing experience as it encountered technical problems mid-air, compelling it to return and land back at Newark Liberty International Airport. The incident involved United Airlines Flight 510, a Boeing 777, with 270 passengers and 14 crew members on board.

During the flight, which took off at 8:37 p.m. on September 14, the aircraft experienced a severe cabin pressurization issue. The situation escalated rapidly as the plane descended over 28,000 feet in just 10 minutes. The sudden and steep drop undoubtedly shook passengers on Flight 510.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) later confirmed that the aircraft had to reverse course due to the cabin pressurization issue. The flight was originally bound for Rome-Fiumicino International Airport but had to turn back to Newark due to safety concerns.

FlightAware data reveals that the plane's rapid descent occurred over approximately 10 minutes before it reversed course and headed back to Newark. The aircraft eventually landed back at Newark Liberty International Airport at 12:27 a.m. on September 15, 2023.

Once the plane safely returned, the passengers disembarked, and they were later accommodated on another aircraft for their journey to Rome. United Airlines made the necessary arrangements to ensure their passengers could continue their travel without further disruptions.

In this case, United Airlines Flight 510's crew responded promptly to address the pressurization issue, and the flight returned safely to its origin, Newark Liberty International Airport. There were no reported injuries, and passengers were eventually able to reach their intended destination in Rome, despite the unexpected turn of events.

The incident highlights the critical role of aircraft maintenance and safety protocols in ensuring passenger well-being during air travel. United Airlines, along with aviation authorities, continues to investigate the root cause of the cabin pressurization problem to prevent such incidents in the future.
