Umar Khalid named 2026 Front Line Defenders regional awardee; parents accept honour in Dublin

Jailed activist unable to attend after six years in custody

DUBLIN: Jailed student activist Umar Khalid has been named a regional recipient of the 2026 Front Line Defenders Award. His parents accepted the honour on his behalf at an international ceremony in Dublin, as Khalid could not attend in person after six years in custody.

The award is given by Front Line Defenders, an international foundation that recognises people around the world who work non-violently to protect human rights, justice and community rights. Many of them face severe personal risk and isolation as a result. The annual award was established in 2005 to honour defenders who make outstanding contributions to protecting the rights of others, often at great personal risk to themselves.

Front Line Defenders was founded in Dublin in 2001 with the specific aim of protecting human rights defenders at risk.

Khalid was arrested on 13 September 2020, after he became a prominent face of nationwide peaceful protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Prosecutors have linked him to the February 2020 Delhi riots case, and he has denied wrongdoing. He has been held under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

On 5 January 2026, the Supreme Court of India denied him bail. Human rights groups say he has been detained without trial for more than five years. Amnesty International said the UAPA is routinely and selectively used against human rights defenders, including journalists, civil society activists and students who remain imprisoned without trial.

Front Line Defenders was among the organisations that issued a joint statement in September calling on the Government of India to release Khalid immediately. The other signatories included Amnesty International, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and CIVICUS.

Parents on stage

Khalid’s parents went on stage to receive the award in his absence.
