According to the news going around, the latest move of Donald Trump will see the appointment of Senator Marco Rubio to the post of Secretary of State in his new administration, which may see the official out - of - this world exit for Vivek Ramaswamy. The decision is still unofficial but the move has emerged as a monumental moment in the selection of Trump's cabinet because it marks one of the final steps that he needs to take to conclude his national security team.
Trump's Choice for Secretary of State
However, according to multiple reports, the president-elect seemingly opts for a Republican senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, for the role of Secretary of State. Rubio would become the very first Latino and the first from his record of having any Hispanic root in the United States' history to hold the highly coveted position. Appointing him is thereby seen as a strategic move by Trump to further improve his administration's approach on foreign policy while appealing to Latino voters, a demographic that has increasingly supported the incumbent in recent elections.
Rubio has been an active senator since 2010 and is famous for being a strong foreign policy champion, especially for all things China, Iran, and Cuba. He has also grown politically as an advocate for the administration of Trump, which is somewhat of a turnaround from when he was one of many voices that criticized Trump personally during the presidential campaign in 2016 where Rubio was among all other voices that were against the candidature of Trump. Gradually, their relationship would find its way to mutual support, with Rubio proving to be a key ally in Rubio's The Trump 2024 campaign.
Ramaswamy Locked Out
The decision to promote Rubio over Ramaswamy fits a larger trend in Trump's orbit. Ramaswamy-the Indian-American entrepreneur who ran against Trump in the primary before dropping out and endorsing the ex-president-was, according to Axios's Jonathan Swan, among those under consideration for Secretary of State. If he is bypassed, he'll be at least the second major Indian American passed over for a cabinet spot by Trump-after Nikki Haley.
Ramaswamy has also expressed interest in accepting a place in the cabinet of Trump and hinted at filling some or all of the roles of a Director of the Department of Homeland Security. He may also focus his sights on politics within the state of Ohio, looking at the Senate seat vacated by JD Vance if he takes the vice presidency.
Who is Marco Rubio?
Marco Rubio was born May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida, to Cuban immigrant parents. He earned his political science degree from the University of Florida and rapidly ascended the political ladder within Florida. It was during his tenure as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives from 2006-2008 that he prepared himself for his eventual career as a United States senator. He has been an influential voice on foreign policy issues within the Senate and currently serves on both the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the
Committee on Foreign Relations
Rubio's foreign policy is more aligned with a more robust hawks position wherein "he calls for strong U.S. involvement in every area while, at the same time, positing negotiation over the use of military force when appropriate." This last period statement shows that he perceives every conflict now, such as in Ukraine, needs to undergo diplomatic negotiations rather than just straight military support. Appointing Marco Rubio as Secretary of State in Trump's second term might signal a return to more traditional Republican foreign policy approaches, but will also try to work with that window of opportunity in broadening his appeal among Latino voters. The dynamics within the Trump cabinet is changing as he works out relationships with leading figures like Ramaswamy and Haley.
