A massive fire at a coal company's office building in China's Shanxi province has resulted in the deaths of at least 26 people and left 38 others injured. The fire, which broke out in a four-story building belonging to the Yongju coal company, has since been brought under control.
Chinese state media initially reported that 11 people had died, but the death toll was later raised. Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Video footage posted on social media showed bright flames and thick black smoke billowing from the building. Emergency response personnel were seen rushing to the scene to extinguish the fire.
This tragedy comes after a Beijing hospital fire earlier this year that left 29 people dead. To ensure that such incidents don't happen again, Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for stricter safety regulations. Unfortunately, due to inadequate enforcement and insufficient safety standards, industrial accidents are widespread in China.
In July, 11 people died when the roof of a school gym collapsed, and the month before, an explosion at a barbecue restaurant killed at least 31 people. One of the deadliest accidents in recent years occurred in 2015, when an explosion at a chemical warehouse in Tianjin killed at least 165 people. These incidents highlight the need for stricter safety regulations and better enforcement in China.
