A Japan Airlines aircraft with passengers on board caught fire, possibly due to a collision with a Coast Guard aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.
The Japan Coast Guard has reported that the aircraft involved in the collision with the Japan Airlines plane was identified as an MA722 fixed-wing aircraft from Haneda Air Base, as stated by Japan's public broadcaster NHK.
Live footage on public broadcaster NHK depicted flames emerging from the windows of the aircraft.
In the Rescue Operation, all 379 passengers and crew aboard the Japan Airlines plane managed to escape, with 17 sustaining injuries, after a collision with a Coast Guard aircraft .
A passenger on the Japan Airlines flight said to Kyodo news agency, "I felt a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed. I saw sparks outside the window, and the cabin filled with gas and smoke."
The coast guard aircraft involved in the collision was a Bombardier Dash-8, part of earthquake relief efforts, with a total of six people on board. Police have confirmed that 5 individuals on a coast guard aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda Airport lost their lives and The captain of the aircraft, a Bombardier-built Dash-8 maritime patrol plane, sustained injuries in the collision.
The Coast Guard clarified that the collision involved one of its planes en route to Niigata airport on Japan's west coast, intending to deliver aid to those affected by a powerful New Year's Day earthquake.
Haneda, one of Tokyo's primary airports, faced significant disruptions after the incident. JAL's competitor, the Japanese airline ANA, announced the cancellation of 112 domestic flights scheduled for the remainder of Tuesday as following the incident, all runways at the airport were closed.
This incident is Japan's most serious aviation tragedy since 1985, when a JAL jumbo jet en route from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in the central Gunma region, claiming the lives of 520 passengers and crew.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed relevant agencies to swiftly assess the damage and provide information to the public.
Transport minister Saito stated that the cause of the accident was unclear, and investigations by the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB), police, and other departments would continue. The collision occurred shortly after landing, and efforts are underway to resume operations at Haneda airport promptly.
