On Thursday night, clashes erupted in Amsterdam between Israeli football fans and apparent pro-Palestinian protesters ahead of a Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax. The confrontations occurred around the Johan Cruyff Arena, Ajax Amsterdam’s home ground, as well as in other parts of the city. Ajax ultimately won the match 5-0.
Police On Alert Amid Rising Tensions
Tensions had reportedly been building over several days, with hundreds of Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters rallying in the city, waving Israeli flags, and taking down a Palestinian flag, as reported by Al Jazeera. Amsterdam police heightened their presence due to the political sensitivities surrounding the event. Videos circulating online showed Israeli fans chanting anti-Arab slogans and engaging in provocations, which led to further confrontations.
Injuries and Arrests as Violence Escalates
The violence reportedly escalated when Maccabi fans began attacking properties displaying Palestinian flags. According to a city council member, Amsterdam residents mobilised in response. About 600 police officers were deployed to contain the unrest, with 62 arrests and five individuals briefly hospitalized for minor injuries. Israeli officials reported ten injuries among their citizens.
Responses from Dutch and Israeli Officials
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema had earlier banned a pro-Palestinian demonstration to prevent tensions, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence, calling for Dutch authorities to take action. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed “horror” over the incidents and vowed that perpetrators would face prosecution. European football body UEFA also condemned the violence and urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
