Tense session in Maldives Parliament leads to physical altercation

The Maldives Parliament has experienced a tense session, leading to a physical altercation, as multiple chaotic videos have emerged online. The clash occurred during a special session called to seek parliamentary approval for President Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet ministers.

One of the videos, which is now widely circulated on the internet, shows an MP clutching a fellow MP's leg and the two taking a tumble together. One of them then returns and places his knee on the other, pulling his hair, as shown in another clip. The video also shows other members attempting to push the MP away.

The two men seen fighting are Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Isa and the ruling PNC MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem. In another video, the MP is seen blowing a horn into the speaker's ear, who tries to block the noise by placing his hands over his ears. According to reports, several members of the ruling party barricaded the House, disrupting the session.
 

Reportedly, violence erupted in the Maldives Parliament on Sunday when government MPs from the pro-government parties People's National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) disrupted proceedings and confronted the Speakers, according to Adhahdhu, a Maldives-based digital news organisation.

As per viral videos circulating online and shared by Adhadhu, a local online news outlet in the Maldives, there was chaos in Parliament as Members of Parliament exchanged physical blows. The widely circulated clips also showed some members pulling each other down from the podium. As per online reports, the clash took place during a special session called to seek parliamentary approval for ministers in President Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet.
