North Korea test 'Haeil-5-23' underwater nuclear system as part of Joint military Drills

North Korea has tested its underwater nuclear weapons system in a protest against this week's joint military drills by South Korea, the United States and Japan, as state media KCNA reported on Friday

North Korea's state media KCNA reveals that the test of the "Haeil-5-23" system, a name North Korea has given to its nuclear-capable underwater attack drones, was carried out by the defence ministry's think tank on its east coast, as per the report, without mentioning a date.

"Our army's underwater nuke-based countering posture is being further rounded off, its various maritime and underwater responsive actions will continue to deter the hostile military manoeuvres of the navies of the U.S. and its allies," the North Korean ministry spokesman said in a statement, according to KCNA, as quoted in Voa News.

The word "Haeil"- means Tsunami, is named for the new drone system that was first reportedly tested in March 2023, and according to state media, it was intended to make sneak attacks in enemy waters and destroy naval strike groups, major operational ports by creating a radioactive wave through an underwater explosion.

Previously, North Korean state television has aired atmospheric explosion tests, which have been monitored by U.S. and South Korean authorities, but the reported underwater weapon has not been verified by authorities.

The Defence Ministry's anonymous official accused the US, South Korea, and Japan of "getting frantic" with military drills, warning of "catastrophic consequences."

The three countries' navy conducted three-day routine drills alongside the US aircraft carrier Carl Vinson to sharpen their responses to Pyongyang's escalating nuclear and missile threats.
