He said he was"overwhelmed and somewhat frightened" when he heard the news. The Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre posted: "All of Norway congratulates and is proud today!"

He added that the prize was "a great recognition of a unique authorship that makes an impression and touches people all over the world".

Jon Fosse, a Norwegian playwright, novelist, and poet, was born in 1959 in Haugesund, Norway. He grew up in Strandebarm, where he nearly died in an accident at the age of seven. This experience, which he has called "the most important experience" of his childhood and one that "created" him as an artist, has had a profound influence on his work.

Jon Fosse is one of Norway's most celebrated authors, and his work has been translated into numerous languages and performed around the world. He has written over 40 plays, as well as novels, essays, poetry collections, children's books, and translations.
