Hurricane Otis rapidly intensifies, reaching a perilous Category 4 level as it approaches the Mexican Pacific coast, specifically targeting Acapulco. Unfortunately, the forecast suggests a worrisome possibility of it strengthening into a devastating Category 5 hurricane upon reaching this cherished beach destination.
The projections indicate a potential rainfall of up to 15 inches (38 centimetres) in certain areas, which has raised concerns about the possibility of flash floods, mudslides, and an extremely dangerous storm surge in the mountainous terrains of Guerrero.
As Otis approaches the area, located around 85 miles (135 kilometres) south-southeast of Acapulco, and moves in a northerly direction at a speed of 8 mph (13 kph), a hurricane warning is currently in effect along the coastline spanning from Punta Maldonado to Zihuatanejo.
In order to address this urgent threat, the authorities have taken the decision to close Acapulco's port. Additionally, a substantial force of over 8,000 troops has been deployed for potential rescue operations. At the same time, the Guerrero state government has made necessary arrangements with 396 shelters to ensure readiness. As a precautionary measure, schools in Guerrero have been temporarily closed. As a safety precaution, the tourist activities in Acapulco have been temporarily suspended.
The US National Hurricane Center has indicated that there may be a weakening trend in Otis's intensity by Thursday.
Mexico faces the recurring challenge of hurricanes on its Pacific and Atlantic coasts every year, from May to November. Unfortunately, this week, three lives were lost in Mexico due to Tropical Storm Norma. Additionally, in the previous month, two fatalities occurred as a result of Category 4 Hurricane Lidia.
Scientists strongly assert that the increasing intensity of storms and other extreme weather events is closely connected to the extensive consequences of climate change. This highlights the urgent necessity for collaborative endeavours to alleviate the impacts on susceptible communities.
