Mexican druglord El Chapo's wife released from federal custody

The notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's wife Emma Coronel Aispuro has been released from federal detention after serving a three-year sentence. Coronel Aispuro, who was found guilty of helping her husband, operate his multibillion-dollar criminal enterprise, came to an agreement on a plea deal in 2021 with federal prosecutors. She was accused of participating in a plot to launder money and working with a foreign drug trafficker. After serving 27 months in prison, Coronel was allowed to leave. She is under supervised release at the moment.

The extent of Emma Coronel Aispuro's involvement in her husband's illegal deeds went beyond financial transactions. Her major role in the daring breakout of El Chapo from a Mexican jail in 2015 is important to mention. She smuggled her husband a GPS watch that was carefully disguised as food during this operation. The location of El Chapo within the prison was tracked by this watch, which helped those involved in the prison break get close to him.

Coronel Aispuro was moved from a Texas prison to a California halfway house ahead of her release. She will now start a four-year period of supervised release, during which she must abide by the guidelines imposed by the legislation.
