The National Centre for Seismology reported that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck New Zealand's Kermadec Islands early on Monday. The earthquake happened at 6.11 am, Indian Standard Time, according to the NCS.
The National Centre for Seismology tweeted, "Earthquake of Magnitude:7.2, Occurred on 24 April 2023, 06:11:52 IST, Lat: -29.95 & Long: -178.02, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Kermadec Islands, New Zealand."

No Risk of a Tsunami
People living close to the shore were urged by the National Emergency Management Agency to quickly move to high ground. It further said that New Zealand may be impacted by the tsunami caused by the earthquake.
We are attempting to determine if the M7.3 KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION earthquake resulted in a tsunami that may strike New Zealand. Move immediately to the nearest high ground or as far inland as you can if you are near the shore and feel a LONG or STRONG earthquake.
Following the M7.1 Kermadec Islands earthquake, there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand, the National Emergency Management Agency of NZ subsequently tweeted. According to the preliminary assessment based on the available data, it is doubtful that the earthquake triggered a tsunami that will endanger New Zealand.
So yes, there have been no recorded casualties.
