Israeli Strike Bombs School in Gaza, Kills Dozens

Israeli Attack in Gaza: Israel attacked the Al Sardi school, which is managed by the United Nations in central Gaza's Nuseirat Refugee Camp. According to UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini, this school housed 6,000 displaced individuals at the time. The Israeli attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, with no prior warning to the displaced Palestinians sheltering there. The attack happened at 2 am and sources report that 40 people had been killed, including 14 children and nine women.

Attacking, targeting or using UN buildings for military purposes is a blatant disregard of International Humanitarian Law." - Philippe Lazzarini.

UNRWA operates over 300 schools in Gaza, but none of them have provided education since October 7th, and have mostly become refugee camps for individuals fleeing the conflict. It's disheartening to know that structures that once served as educational institutions for children are now witnessing their deaths.

Sam Rose, of the Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, said that there are rules of war that we call on all sides of the conflict to adhere to, to protect the inviolability of our installations. There are also principles of distinction and proportionality.  He also pointed out that there will be a psychological reckoning in the people at some point and how people’s requirement to adjust repeatedly to the realities of life in Gaza is something that no one should have to put up with.

The United Nations has denounced the attack. According to spokesperson Stephane Dujarric- "It's just another horrific example of the price that civilians are paying, that Palestinian men, women and children who are just trying to survive, who are being forced to move around in sort of a death circle around Gaza, trying to find safety, are paying."

The shelter camps in Gaza

Since early May, Israel's military has been conducting what it claims as a limited operation in Rafah to remove Hamas fighters and damage infrastructure utilized by the Palestinian Islamist militant group. According to reports, the small city on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip had been housing about 1 million Palestinians who fled due to ‘unspeakable conditions.’

In several discussions, the UN Council Members called on Israel to reconsider its invasion of Rafah and expressed concern about the looming humanitarian catastrophe. However, Israel says it must destroy the Islamist militant group of Hamas first.
