History was made by Hurricane Helene last Thursday night, as it became the most powerful hurricane ever to strike Florida's Big Bend region. Even weakening from a Category 4 hurricane down to a Category 1. Helene had brought dangerous storm surges, tremendous flooding, and destructive winds that have caused massive damage across all of Florida and parts of Georgia. So far, three lives have been confirmed to be lost, and over 1.5 million people were left without electricity. Fallen power lines, flooded roads, and damaged buildings make travel difficult in some places, while restricting emergency services as well.
Hurricane Helene tore ashore along the Florida coast Thursday night as an explosive and potentially devastating category 4 storm, leaving destruction in its wake across a broad swath of the Gulf coast and threatening howling winds, storm surges, and drenching rain. Helene was centred about 70 km east-southeast of Tallahassee, Fla., with maximum sustained winds of 225 kph, the Miami-based UA National Hurricane Centre said yesterday. The massive storm had formed rapidly this past week, intensifying as it hurtled across the warm waters of the Gulf while gaining strength. Helene's storm surge-the wall of seawater pushed onto land by hurricane force winds can get as high as 20ft in some places
Worst effected areas by Hurricane Helene
There were significant reported damages and hazardous conditions in most counties in Florida because of Hurricane Helene. Here is how some of the areas with the worst damage are coping with the hurricane , Charlotte, Citru, Gadsden, Hillsboroug, Levy,Sarasota, Suwannee, Pasco.
Steps for Recovery
Emergency workers have already been racing to clear debris, restore power, and to support those areas affected by the storm. Counties are asking residents to stay indoors and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary as many roads remain hazardous due to flooding. The full impact of the storm is yet to be assessed, though the process of recovery has already begun. But for many towns and villages, the recovery will be long and arduous. So far, the extent of damage caused by Helene's winds and floods has been deeply taxing. And so, residents have been advised to remain on alert.
