Fire in Peruvian gold mine kills 27

Authorities in Peru said that during an overnight shift, a fire deep inside a gold mine in the south of the country killed at least 27 miners.175 employees had been safely evacuated following the disaster, which occurred late on Friday or early on Saturday, according to a statement from the Yanaquihua mining firm. The 27 people who died allegedly worked for a mining-focused contractor.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, according to government officials. A short circuit in a section of the mine around 100 metres (330 feet) below the surface, according to some news accounts, may have been the cause of an explosion.

Buses were used to transport victims' relatives to the Yanaquihua mine in the Arequipa region, where they were given a briefing by security personnel. Some people waited for the bodies of their loved ones by sitting in front of posters at the mine's entrance.

One of the victims, according to Marcelina Aguirre's husband, is She insisted that he had forewarned her of the mine's risks. We are quite worried and upset that we might lose a husband and leave two abandoned children, the woman said.

Investigators are attempting to shed further light on what transpired, according to the Public Ministry of Arequipa's Fiscal District. The prosecutor's office said in a statement that it would "determine the cause of the tragic event and the responsibilities of those involved" during the inquiry.
