New Zealand officials declared a National State of Emergency on Tuesday in response to Cyclone Gabrielle's devastating impact on the North Island.
The storm has caused flooding, landslides, and left tens of thousands without power. Air New Zealand has announced that some services will resume on Tuesday afternoon. This is the third time in the nation's history that a state of emergency has been declared, and officials are expecting the damage to be extensive.
According to the New Zealand Meteorological Service, waves off the Bay of Islands were close to 11 meters (36 feet) high and recorded winds of over 140 kilometres per hour (87 miles per hour).
The cyclone is also expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Australia.
