As Cyclone Freddy struck Southern Africa for the second time in a month, it left more than 60 people dead and dozens more injured in Malawi and Mozambique. According to the World Meteorological Organization, Freddy is one of the strongest cyclones to have ever been observed in the Southern Hemisphere and may turn out to be the longest-lasting tropical storm.
On Saturday, it hit central Mozambique, tearing off roofs and causing massive flooding in the port of Quelimane. Later, it moved inland towards Malawi, where it poured torrential rains that led to landslides.
At least 60 bodies had been brought to Blantyre, the main commercial center of Malawi, by early Monday afternoon, according to Marion Pechayre, the country director for Doctors Without Borders, who also added that 200 injured persons were being treated there, to the Reuters.
