Canada is now pulling back from an open immigration policy it has been leading for decades. The government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the new arrivals would be restricted as Canada planned for the first time in decades to cut down immigrants. Permanent resident admissions are likely to decline by almost 20 percent by 2025. In a post on X, Canadian Prime Minister said, “Our decision to temporarily reduce the number of immigrants is a pragmatic one that addresses the needs of our economy right now.”
Immigration Minister Marc Miller revealed, reducing permanent admissions from a projected 485,000 this year to some 395,000. Temporary residents, like international students and foreign workers will also be capped down from 800,000 this year to about 446,000 by 2025. Impact on Indian Workers This cut would also have a devastating impact on Indians, particularly the unskilled ones.
Tensions between India and Canada were already affecting the processing time of visas. This policy might just be enough to jeopardize the future of Indian workers who look to Canada for better prospects. Public and Business Reaction Public opinion towards immigration is also growing colder in Canada. Environics Institute claims that "there is too much immigration" according to 60% of Canadians. But Small business owners are afraid of loosing low skilled workers and foreign labor, who keep their business afloat.
