On Saturday in Bangladesh's Chhatrakanda region, a bus went off the road and crashed into a large pond, resulting in at least 17 fatalities, including three children, and 35 injuries. The bus driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to give way to an auto-rickshaw outside the local parish office for the Barishal-bound bus from Bhandaria upazila to Pirojpur, and the bus crashed into the pond. According to Officer-in-Charge Nasir Uddin of the Jhalakathi Sadar police station, the event happened at 9.55 in the morning. An officer of the law stated, "The divers have recovered 17 bodies, and a police crane is attempting to recover the bus from the pond filled with water after heavy monsoon rains."
According to police sub-inspector Gautamm Kumar Ghose, there were eight women and three children among the deceased. The 'Bashar Smrity Paribahan' bus was said to be carrying 60 to 70 people. 35 wounded passengers were among those who were carried to the Jhalakathi district hospital. There may be more bodies trapped inside the vehicle. The bus is being attempted to be recovered from the water body by local firefighting forces. Four more people passed away at the hospital, while 13 dead were found by rescuers at the scene, according to Dr Zahirul Islam, the district's civil surgeon. Hundreds of vehicles were left stuck on either side of the event, which caused traffic on the Khulna-Jhalakathi route to be shut down.
