The U.S. Geological Survey says that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 hit the Colombian city of Bogota on Thursday. Residents ran out into the street in fear, and a woman fell and died. The quake, which Colombia's national geological service said had a magnitude of 6.1, did not seem to cause any big damage right away.
Adrian Alarcon, who works in the busy Park 93 neighbourhood of the city, said, "It was strong and lasted a long time." "It makes me feel like I'm fragile," he said. "In a moment, everything changes. You can't do anything else but run for your life." One woman died when she fell out of a window during the earthquake in the southeast of the city, Mayor Claudia Lopez said on X, the social media site that used to be called Twitter.
"We are very sad about the only serious incident that has been reported: a woman in Madelena jumped from the 10th floor of a residential building, probably because she was scared. We're sending medical teams to be with those who were in the house with her," Lopez said.
The Colombian Congress said that the earthquake caused damage to the house of representatives, where an ornament made of plaster fell from the ceiling and landed on a desk below. In a message shared on X, the House of Representatives said that no one was hurt.
The whole town of Calvario, which is southeast of the capital, has been evacuated, according to Colombia's civil defence service. The quakes broke some windows in the area. The agency said there was a landslip in nearby Villavicencio and that its staff was looking for more damage.
Aftershocks happened a few minutes after the first quake, when many people were in the streets of the city. The national geological service of Colombia said that the second quake had a magnitude of 5.6, and the aftershock that came after it had a magnitude of 4.8.
