What are the 'Maratha Military Landscapes', India's possible next UNESCO World Heritage Site

The "Maratha Military Landscapes" are something India wants to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024–2025. The Maratha military heritage's significance in history and culture is honoured by this collection. Throughout the Maratha Empire, it included forts, citadels, and other key military structures from various regions of India.

UNESCO World Heritage List?

Many cultural and natural sites are on the UNESCO World Heritage List because they are important to everyone. These places are preserved for future generations because they are important to culture, history, science, or nature.

Many important places in the Maratha Military Landscapes can be found in Tamil Nadu. These include Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohagad, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and Gingee Fort. The interesting history of India and how well the Maratha kings planned their attacks can be seen in these spots. From coast to island and up to the hills, there are many forts around the world.

Maratha military ideology

Maratha Military Landscapes

During the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, from the 1600s to 1818 CE, the Peshwa family used Maratha military ideas. During this time, Maharashtra built more than 390 forts. Only 12 forts were picked for the Maratha Military Landscapes nomination. The Archaeological Survey of India looks after eight of them, and the Government of Maharashtra's Directorate of Archaeology and Museums looks after the other four.
