Vygr Maharashtra: Asia's largest slum, 'Dharavi', to be redeveloped by Adani Properties

Asia's largest slum 'Dharavi', which got famous because of the Bollywood movie 'Slumdog Millionaire' released in 2008, is finally ready to undergo change. The Maharashtra government has approved Adani Properties for the redevelopment of Dharavi slum.

This project has been pending for the last 15 years. Last November 2022, the government started taking applications for financial bids for the contract for this project. Adani group, DLF and Naman group were the three companies which submitted their bids. Amongst them, Adani Group, the biggest bidder, received this contract.

A Rs. 23,000 crore worth project is estimated to be completed in 17 years and the rehabilitation work will be done in the next 7 years. Dharavi has a large population of around 1 million. Many people have spent their entire lives there. It's not just their houses. But this slum is a hub for many small businesses, like footwear, clothes, medicine and so on. Also, the place has significance as it is near to Bandra Kurka Corporation (BKC), the biggest commercial area in the city. It is not easy to rehabilitate people on nearly 300 acres of land. Many people who live there earned through the rent of their other houses in Dharavi. After rehabilitation, there will be questions about their earnings.

Redevelopment is going to happen anyway and looking at the geographical location of Dharavi, it's needed. But proper rehabilitation of each and every family is crucial.
