Uber has rolled out its first water transport initiative in Asia with the launch of the Uber Shikara service on Kashmir’s iconic Dal Lake. This move promises to enhance the tourism experience in the region by allowing visitors to book traditional Kashmiri shikaras directly through the Uber app.
The Uber Shikara service has been introduced with an initial fleet of seven shikaras. It offers one-hour rides that operate between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with the option for tourists to pre-book rides up to 15 days in advance. This initiative is aimed at providing a seamless experience for travelers looking to explore the picturesque beauty of Dal Lake.
A Blend of Technology and Tradition
Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, described the new service as a “humble attempt to blend technology and tradition.” Singh emphasized that the service aims to enhance accessibility and support tourism in the region. In a unique move, Uber will not charge any service fees, allowing the entire fare to go directly to local shikara operators.
Support from the Shikara Community
Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, expressed optimism about the initiative. He noted that the service could positively impact the livelihoods of the nearly 4,000 shikara operators on Dal Lake. The app-based system is expected to standardize pricing, reduce haggling, and provide a stable source of income for local boatmen.
How to Book a Shikara Ride with Uber
Tourists can book a ride by selecting “Uber Shikara” in the app, setting Shikara Ghat No. 16 as the pickup point, and choosing a convenient time slot. Each shikara ride accommodates up to four passengers, offering an easy and accessible way to enjoy the serene beauty of Dal Lake.
This innovative service by Uber is anticipated to revolutionize the tourism experience in Kashmir, merging modern convenience with the region's rich cultural heritage.
