Two migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh, identified as Usman Malik and Sofiyan , were shot by suspected militants in the Magam area of Budgam district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday evening. Both are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Security forces have since cordoned off the Magam area as investigations continue.
Leaders Condemn the Violence
The attack has drawn strong condemnation from political leaders. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah expressed deep sorrow and condemned the attack, calling for an end to such violence. Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi also reacted to the attack, questioning the increase in attacks following recent elections and calling on the central government, which oversees security in the region, to take accountability.
Recent Surge in Attacks on Migrant Workers
This incident marks the fifth militant attack on migrant workers in recent weeks, following a series of targeted assaults across the Valley. On October 20, seven workers, six of whom were from outside Kashmir, lost their lives in an attack on a construction camp near Sonamarg in Ganderbal district. Additional incidents in Shopian and Tral earlier this month have further raised concerns, with civilian and military personnel among the casualties.
Congress Calls for Action
Tariq Hameed Karra, chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, called the attack "most unfortunate and highly condemnable." He urged the government to intensify security measures to prevent further attacks, describing these acts as inhuman and cowardly.
