Star’s Election Debut in North, South Remains BJP’s Battlefield

New Delhi and Chennai: On Sunday, ahead of the nation-wide celebration of Holi, the BJP released its fifth list of candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. In which they have announced right-wing leaning actress Kangana Ranaut contesting from Himachal’s Mandi constituency, and business tycoon Naveen Jindal vying from Haryana’s Kurukshetra. Actor Arun Govil earned fame for his Rama role in longest playing TV series Ramayana, is swapping camera for campaign.Govil is all set to fight election from Meerut in UP. Despite Varun Gandhi's exclusion from the BJP's candidate list in Uttar Pradesh, his mother, Maneka Gandhi, has successfully retained her candidature in Sultanpur. General VK Singh is no longer contesting from Ghaziabad. He is replaced by Atul Garg.

The BJP's candidate list for the upcoming Lok Sabha election carries suspense and surprise. Released in phases rather than all at once, it keeps suspense high across the nation. The very first list, released on March 2, confirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's candidacy from his stronghold in Varanasi for the third time.The first list named  195 candidates, whereas the fifth list has some star candidates like Ranaut.

New entrant to the party in Jharkhand Sita Soren will fight from Dumka and party’s spokesperson, Dr Sambit Patra, will contest from Puri.

The unveiling of the ruling party's list has quelled all speculations regarding the inclusion of former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla's name in the Darjeeling constituency. Instead, BJP's Raju Bista has been confirmed as the candidate to contest from Darjeeling.  Former Calcutta High Court Judge, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, to contest from Tamluk; fashion designer Agnimitra Paul to run in Medinipur; and party leader Dilip Ghosh to contest the Bardhaman-Durgapur seat. Amid the horrific Sandeshkhali incident, Rekha Patra, a victim, emerged as BJP's candidate for the Basirhat constituency.

The South is going to be a battlefield for the party.  The party, seeking 400 seats alongside its alliance, announced the party's Kerala president K Surendra's candidacy against Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad. This will be one of the toughest battles. K Surendra referred to both Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and Annie Raja of the CPI as outsiders or "tourists" to the constituency.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the CAA is a violation of the constitution. In Tamil Nadu, where there are 39 parliamentary seats, nine constituencies, including Chennai North, Chennai South, Vellore, and Coimbatore, will witness a triangular contest. This three-way battle involves the incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP's Tamil Nadu President, K Annamalai, is set to vie for Coimbatore. Meanwhile, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, who resigned from her position as Governor of Telangana and Puducherry, will enter the electoral fray from Chennai South.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami released a comprehensive manifesto last week detailing  electoral promises, aiming to resonate with voters across Tamil Nadu.  Among them, the party proposed an alternative examination method for NEET, vehemently opposed the implementation of CAA, and advocated for a monthly stipend of Rs. 3,000 for economically deprived women heading households.
