Rare super blue moon on August 30

On August 30th, prepare for a very unique experience as a rare, "blue moon" celestial occurrence illuminates the heavens.

A super blue moon is expected to make an appearance on Wednesday, coinciding with the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, following a stunning display of meteor showers and an alluring moon in the first few days of the month. This phenomenon results from the moon's elliptical orbit around the Earth, as opposed to its circular orbit. In other words, the moon changes its distance from us by getting closer at perigee and farther away at apogee.

On August 30, 2023, at exactly 20:37 EDT, the super blue moon is anticipated to shine brightest. The ideal times of the night for moongazing, particularly around sunset, coincide with the moonrise. The best method to view it is through a telescope or pair of binoculars so you can clearly see all of its special characteristics.

If neither of these are available to you, you can still watch the event with your unaided eye. You can view this unusual celestial phenomenon, which won't happen again for a while, by keeping an eye on the moon after sunset. Just before sunset is the best time to see the super blue moon.
