Gujarat: Rajkot Airport’s Canopy collapsed Amid Heavy Rain

On Saturday, amid heavy rainfall and strong winds, the canopy at the passenger pickup and drop-off area outside Rajkot Airport in Gujarat collapsed.

No injuries or casualties were reported.

According to officials, the canopy broke during maintenance work aimed at removing accumulated rainwater. Repair work is currently underway, and a detailed report on the incident has been requested, as reported by ANI.

The new greenfield airport at Hirasar village, about 25 km from Rajkot, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in July 2023.

Gujarat is experiencing heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for south Gujarat, anticipating heavy showers on June 29. Amid high alert, seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in the districts of Kutch, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Narmada, and Valsad.

Similar Incidents in Delhi and Jabalpur

Amid Heavy Rains in Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) Terminal-1 roof collapsed on June 28, claiming the life of a 45-year-old cab driver and six others were reportedly injured. The incident has led to the indefinite suspension of operations at Terminal-1, which typically handles around 200 flights a day.

In another incident on June 27, part of a fabric canopy at Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur airport collapsed due to water accumulation from heavy rains. While no injuries were reported, the collapse crushed a car parked below. Authorities have directed a probe and issued strict orders to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Further Details are awaited.
