On February 28, police in Manipur's Meitei-dominated valley districts protested after an Arambai Tenggol member kidnapped a police officer. The incident happened when armed miscreants broke into Additional Superintendent of Police Moirangthem Amit's Imphal East home. After being kidnapped, the officer and one of his escorts were eventually found and taken to a hospital, where they received medical attention. The miscreants' destruction of the officer's property caused two people to suffer injuries, which prompted police intervention.

Manipur Police's Obstacles
Manipur Police's morale has suffered since they believe civil society organisations do not stand behind them and they are unable to take decisive action against lawbreakers. The Meitei people strongly support Arambai Tenggol, a well-known group in the area; hence, it is difficult for the government to repress its members. More challenges for law enforcement come from the armed civilian presence and people's hesitation to engage the group for fear of things getting worse.
Armed Rebel Organisations and Cases of Extortion
In addition to Arambai Tenggol, another security danger in Meitei communities is the United National Liberation Front (UNLF). Despite signing a peace treaty, the UNLF has been connected to attacks on security forces and extortion charges. The security situation in Manipur has become more complex due to the emergence of armed groups and the increase in extortion activities.
Police Rank-Related Ethnic Violence and Divisions
Ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo people in the hills and the Meitei people in the valley occurred in Manipur, resulting in casualties and forced migration. Divisions amongst police ranks have widened as a result of the conflict; policemen from various communities are stationed in particular locations according to their ethnicity. The complexity of upholding law and order in the area has increased as a result of this split.
Government Reaction and Chief Minister's Involvement
CM N. Biren Singh chaired a meeting with the MPS officers at his residential office to address the grievances of the state security personnel who had launched an arms down strike today.#Manipur #ManipurViolence #ManipurPolice #NBirenSingh #StopTheViolence #MyManipur #Imphal pic.twitter.com/iEnJHJKkwJ— Imphalgram (@imphalgram) February 28, 2024
Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh met with Manipur Police Service officials to discuss their complaints in reaction to the police demonstration. The government must strike a balance between the state's sensitive sociopolitical dynamics and the requirement for security measures. The Chief Minister's interaction with police officers is indicative of an effort to allay security personnel's worries and boost police morale.
In summary,
The Manipur crisis highlights the intricate interplay between armed insurgency organisations, ethnic conflicts, and the difficulties faced by law enforcement. The growth of weapons, violent incidents, and the support that some groups receive from the local populace underscore the necessity of a comprehensive strategy to handle security concerns in the area. To reduce violence, protect public safety, and preserve the rule of law in Manipur, there must be effective cooperation between the government, security forces, and community partners.
