On Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly approved a resolution urging the central government to engage in dialogue with local representatives to restore the region’s special status which was previously protected under Article 370. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced the resolution and emphasized on the importance of restoring special status to safeguard Jammu and Kashmir’s unique identity and rights.
BJP’s Strong Opposition
The resolution faced fierce opposition from the BJP members. They protested loudly and tore copies of the resolution in the Assembly. The protest was Led by Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma. They also argued that the resolution is “unconstitutional” while stating that the revocation of Article 370 had already been ratified by Parliament. Despite BJP’s protests, the Speaker moved forward with a voice vote and the resolution was passed. This resolution marks the first formal rejection by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly of the changes enacted in 2019.
Mixed Responses from Other Parties
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other non-BJP parties expressed general support for the resolution. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti aslo criticized it as “half-hearted” for only expressing concern rather than fully opposing Article 370’s abrogation. PDP legislator Waheed Para proposed amendments to reinforce the resolution and urged a stronger rejection of the 2019 constitutional changes in Jammu and Kashmir.
