A disturbing incident involving two minor students in Bihar’s Jamui has triggered widespread outrage after videos showing them allegedly being surrounded, assaulted and harassed by a group of men surfaced online. Police have since arrested three people in connection with the incident and launched a wider investigation to identify everyone allegedly involved.

The incident reportedly took place on September 19, between around 6 pm and 7 pm, when the Class 10 boy and girl were returning after attending coaching classes. According to police, the teenagers had also gone to the area on a scooter to take photographs before the confrontation occurred.

The case came to wider attention after videos of the incident began circulating on social media. The footage prompted calls for immediate police intervention, following which authorities traced the two minors, recorded their statements and began identifying the people seen in the videos.

What Happened in Jamui?

The videos circulating online appear to show the teenagers being stopped by a group of people while travelling on a two-wheeler. Several men can be seen surrounding them and questioning them.

In one clip, the boy appears to explain that he and the girl attend the same school and that their families are aware of them. Despite his explanation, one of the men allegedly slaps him and tells him to call his family. Another person is heard asking that the family be contacted.

The girl can be seen pleading with the group to let them leave. In one of the videos, she reportedly folds her hands while asking the men to release them. She is also heard repeatedly requesting that they be allowed to go.

Another clip shows members of the group allegedly chasing the teenagers after they attempted to leave. The boy is seen being pulled by his shirt collar, while another man appears to grab and lift the girl before moving away with her.

The footage also appears to show the girl being subjected to inappropriate physical contact. She can be heard screaming and resisting while the boy attempts to intervene and help her. The teenagers eventually move towards their parked two-wheeler, but the confrontation appears to continue, with one of the men allegedly grabbing the girl's arm.

Police have said that around six to seven people were visible in the videos and that investigators were working to establish the individual roles of those involved.

Police Action After Videos Went Viral

The case initially presented a challenge for investigators because the victims and their families had not immediately approached the police.

Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal said police took cognisance of the videos, traced the two teenagers and recorded their statements. According to the police, the victims subsequently submitted an application, following which an FIR was registered.

The investigation then focused on identifying the people appearing in the footage and establishing their involvement. Three people have now been arrested, while efforts to identify and take action against other suspects are continuing.

Police are also examining the videos and other available evidence to determine precisely what happened, where each part of the incident occurred and the roles played by the individuals present.

The fact that the victims were minors has also become a significant aspect of the investigation. Reports indicate that provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been invoked along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on the allegations and statements recorded during the investigation.

Videos Trigger Public Outrage

The footage generated a strong reaction online, with users tagging Bihar Police and Jamui Police and demanding swift action against those allegedly involved.

The videos are particularly disturbing because they appear to show the teenagers pleading repeatedly for their release while several people remain around them. The incident has also raised questions about the circumstances in which a group was able to confront two minors in a public place and allegedly subject them to physical and sexual harassment.

At the same time, investigators are responsible for establishing the full sequence of events and determining the exact conduct of each person visible in the footage. Police have indicated that further action will follow as evidence is gathered and the identities and roles of the remaining suspects are confirmed.

Rahul Gandhi Calls for Action Under POCSO

The incident has also drawn a political response.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi publicly condemned the alleged treatment of the girl and questioned how such an incident could occur on a public road in the evening. He called for stringent legal action and specifically referred to the POCSO Act, given that the girl and boy involved are minors.

His remarks focused on the broader issue of the treatment of women and girls in public spaces and what he described as attempts by men to control their movement and choices.

Bihar minister Sunil Kumar also condemned the incident and said that the local administration would take appropriate action against those responsible. At the same time, he rejected the broader characterisation that the incident represented conditions across the entire state, stressing that action should be based on the specific facts of the case.

Questions Over Public Safety and Vigilante Behaviour

Beyond the immediate arrests, the Jamui incident has renewed discussion about public safety, harassment and the dangers of groups taking matters into their own hands.

The videos appear to show the teenagers being questioned about their relationship and whereabouts before the situation escalates. Regardless of what prompted the confrontation, any allegations of assault or sexual harassment involving minors require investigation through lawful authorities rather than intimidation or physical intervention by private individuals.

The case also highlights the complicated role of social media in criminal investigations. In this instance, the circulation of the footage brought the incident to police attention and helped investigators identify the victims and alleged suspects. At the same time, viral videos can lack context, and investigators still need to establish when, where and under what circumstances the footage was recorded.

Authorities are therefore examining the available material alongside the statements of the teenagers and other evidence.

Investigation Continues

As of September 21, three people have been arrested in connection with the Jamui incident, while the investigation into the remaining individuals is continuing.

Police have said that the videos show several people at the scene and that their individual roles will be examined. The authorities are also expected to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether additional offences or suspects emerge during the investigation.

The case has drawn attention not only because of the disturbing visuals but also because the victims were reportedly minors returning from coaching classes. Their statements and the evidence collected by investigators will be central to determining what happened and what legal action should follow.

For now, the arrests mark the first major development after the videos surfaced, but the investigation remains ongoing. The authorities' next task will be to identify every person allegedly involved, establish their individual conduct through evidence and ensure that the case proceeds under the applicable laws protecting children from abuse and exploitation.
