India Signs $2 Million Agreement with International Solar Alliance to Boost Solar Energy

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) signed a Project Implementation Agreement with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on Tuesday to operationalise a USD 2 million solar energy initiative in Fiji, Comoros, Madagascar, and Seychelles. This move comes as part of India’s commitment under the Quad Climate Working Group to support renewable energy projects in Indo-Pacific island nations.

Focus on Island Nations' Energy Challenges

According to a study by the ISA, these nations face several energy-related challenges, including unreliable electricity supply in healthcare facilities, a lack of solar mini-grids in remote areas, and difficulties in preserving perishable agricultural products. The solar projects aim to address these issues by focusing on areas such as cold storage solutions, solar-powered healthcare facilities, and solar water pumping systems for irrigation.

The successful implementation of these projects is expected to improve energy access, enhance employment opportunities, and provide reliable power in these regions. Solar energy has been identified as a sustainable solution to address the energy and climate challenges faced by these island nations.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India’s dedication to fostering renewable energy adoption and facilitating just energy transitions in the Indo-Pacific region. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with India's broader mission to combat climate change and advance sustainable development.

"The latest round of clean energy investments by India strengthens the Quad's commitment to addressing climate change and accelerating the transition to a clean energy economy for shared prosperity," the MEA stated.

These investments reinforce India's leadership in promoting renewable energy and tackling climate challenges in vulnerable regions.

This project underlines India's role in supporting global renewable energy goals and underscores its commitment to sustainable development for people, the planet, and future prosperity.
