The Indian Army received a heartfelt send-off from the people of Wayanad district in Kerala following their remarkable efforts in a recent landslide rescue operation. Soldiers who risked their lives to save others were gratified by the local community. The rescue mission lasted ten days and saw around 500 soldiers from battalions based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Bengaluru working tirelessly to aid those trapped by the devastating landslides.
In an official statement, the Kochi Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) expressed deep appreciation for the soldiers’ bravery: “We are deeply grateful to our brave heroes who risked everything during the landslide rescue operations. Your courage and sacrifice won’t be forgotten.” The operation, marked by the dedication and heroism of the soldiers, will now be handed over to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Force, and Kerala Police.
Emotional Farewell and Community Support
As the Indian Army personnel prepared to leave Wayanad, the farewell scenes were emotional and poignant. Residents, officials, and well-wishers lined the streets to offer their heartfelt thanks. A special farewell ceremony organized by the Wayanad district administration further highlighted the profound impact of the soldiers’ efforts.
A video shared by the PRO captures the warm reception received by the departing soldiers. Colonel Paramvir Singh Nagra, who led the mission, praised the joint operation's success: “This was a joint operation carried out under the leadership of Major General Mathew, with the invaluable support of residents and administration. Volunteers came from Wayanad and from all over Kerala and Tamil Nadu to assist us.” While most soldiers are set to return, a maintenance team for the Bailey Bridge, temporarily constructed by the Army, will remain on-site to ensure its continued functionality.
