You buy salt for 20 rupees but do you know what the worker who produces it earns?
Just 10 rupees for extracting 20 kilos of salt. This raises a big question about income inequality in India.
Why do those doing the toughest physical work earn the least?
The answer lies in market structure not effort. Producers at the bottom of the supply chain get the smallest share of value. Intermediaries and sellers capture most of the profit.
So while consumers pay a modest price for a basic necessity the people behind its production continue to live in financial insecurity.
The real issue is not just poverty. It is the deep imbalance between labour and reward.
Until this changes the people who work the hardest may continue to earn the least.
