On October 21, an unusual controversy erupted in Himachal Pradesh’s CID headquarters when samosas and cake meant for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu were mistakenly served to his security staff. The CID launched an investigation into the incident to identify lapses in coordination that led to the error.
What Led to the Mix-Up?
According to an enquiry report conducted by a deputy SP rank officer, snacks were ordered from a hotel in Lakkar Bazaar for the Chief Minister’s visit to the CID headquarters. However, these refreshments were served to the security staff instead. The report noted that a lack of communication was the main cause, as only the Sub-Inspector (SI) who directed an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a head constable to collect the snacks knew they were for the Chief Minister. The food items ended up in the mechanical transport section after being handed to a woman inspector, who did not verify their intended recipient.
“Anti-Government” Claims
The high-ranking CID official labeled the incident as "anti-CID and anti-government," accusing those involved of acting with their own agenda. This sparked backlash from political opponents, with Jai Ram Thakur, the Leader of Opposition, stating, “The opposition has not eaten those samosas, those who were served those samosas were a part of the government, so how could the act be anti-government?”
Chief Minister Sukhu and CID Officials
Chief Minister Sukhu brushed off the “samosa controversy” as a minor issue and said that the investigation was focused on “misbehavior” by officials. CID Deputy General Sanjeev Ranjan Ojha also clarified that this was an internal issue, advising against politicizing it. Himachal’s “samosa controversy” has shown us that even the tastiest snacks can turn into a political hot potato and even trigger a CID probe. While serious matters wait for the spotlight, the humble samosa has accidentally stolen the show.
