Chennai Schools Closed Amid Warnings of Heavy Rain Across Tamil Nadu

An orange alert has been declared in several regions, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala, as heavy rainfall is expected over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains due to a well-marked low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal.

School Closures in Tamil Nadu

In anticipation of the heavy rain, schools in Chennai and 10 other districts in Tamil Nadu have been closed today. The affected districts are Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur.

Weather Forecast for Tamil Nadu and Neighbouring Areas

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in areas such as Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai. There are also warnings for isolated thunderstorms and lightning.

Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka for the next two days.

Low-Pressure Area Causes Weather Disruption

The IMD's latest bulletin states that the low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which formed on December 9, has intensified and is now a well-marked low-pressure area. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka and the Tamil Nadu coast over the next 24 hours.

In response to the heavy rain threat, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local emergency services have been put on standby. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea between December 11 and 13 due to dangerous conditions.

Precautions for Residents

This isn't the first instance of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu this year. In November, several districts, including Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Mayladuthurai, experienced similar weather conditions, leading to school closures.

Residents are urged to stay indoors and follow local authorities' instructions to stay safe during this period of heavy rainfall.
