Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued in Mumbai and the MMR Till June 10

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) weather forecast, yellow and orange warnings have been issued in numerous districts of Maharashtra for heavy rain until June 10. With strong odds of rain throughout the week, the region's minimum temperature is predicted to drop to 27 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the weather department, Mumbai, Thane and Pune will receive thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 50 to 60 km/ph.

The forecast report

Previous spells of rain have caused waterlogging in many areas of Mumbai due to significant potholes. With the recent alerts, Mumbai needs to be prepared for the Monsoon changes and their related challenges. A vortex and an active shear zone will be forming over the Maharashtra coast which will cause the rain. Mumbai is expected to get 100mm of rainfall, with some isolated areas exceeding even 150mm.

The Monsoon Arrival

The residents of Mumbai experienced the pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday morning, bringing some relief from the oppressive heat. Currently, the northern limit of the monsoon passes through -

  • Ratnagiri and Solapur in Maharashtra,
  • Medak in Telangana,
  • Bhadrachalam and Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh, and
  • Islampur in Bengal.

Last year, the Mumbai Monsoons brought tremendous rains, causing waterlogging in numerous sections of Mumbai and forcing the closing of the bustling Andheri subway. In Mumbai, two individuals were killed when trees fell on them. The civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, or 'BEST' buses on three routes were redirected near Ketki pada in Dahisar East. Several areas of Mumbai experienced major waterlogging, causing traffic congestion and people walking in knee-deep water. After the challenges that the city faced last year, the management and the officials need to be better equipped with their preparations of this year's Monsoon.

The Southwest Monsoon is likely to enter Maharashtra and Goa before June 10 or 11, as it usually does. These favourable conditions indicate the onset of Monsoons. As the Southwest Monsoon advances into more central parts of the central Arabian Sea, there are also forecasts of a Monsoon surge in the entire Western region of India which has been experiencing soaring high temperatures.
