Ahead of heavy rains in Chennai and the surrounding Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts in anticipation. A low-pressure accuring over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to bring rainfall between 6 cm and 12 cm at isolated areas, primarily from November 12 through November 15. This is likely to move toward Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka in the coming days and will result in intensifying rain.
IMD Issues Yellow Alerts in Several Districts
The IMD has issued yellow alerts to districts in Tamil Nadu and several other districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall in the week ahead. Today, 12 districts are under alert, increasing to 17 on November 13, then 27 on November 14, and finally covering 25 districts by November 15. An IMD bulletin had quoted saying, "Moderate to heavy rains accompanied with thunderstorms with lightning at some places likely over the city and the suburbs in the next 48 hours. The day temperatures will be between 32°C and 33°C while the night temperature will be around 25°C.
Rainfall Pattern Across Regions
Scattered rainfalls will enter the state's coastal districts, Tiruvallur to Ramanathapuram from November 12. The rain will then spread into the southern interior regions and part of the western regions by November 14, hitting the northern and southern areas by November 15. Showers will then move into western and northern interior regions by November 16 and 17.
