Goa AAP chief Amit Palekar gets arrested for misleading Drunken driving case

Amit Palekar, the state president of the AAP and an advocate, was detained by police on Thursday for allegedly attempting to obstruct justice by presenting a dummy driver in the drunk driving case that claimed the lives of three people and left many more injured in Banastarim, Goa, about four weeks ago.

“We have arrested Palekar for the destruction of evidence, harboring the offender, and giving false information to police,” Goa police crime branch inspector Narayan Chimulkar told TOI. Palekar moved to the sessions court shortly after being detained and was given temporary bail.

According to police sources quoted by TOI, Palekar went to Mardol police on August 6 with a fake driver named Ganesh Lamani in an attempt to save builder Paresh Sawardekar after he had killed three people while operating a Mercedes-Benz SUV while intoxicated. Additionally detained on Thursday was Lamani.

The opponents, meanwhile, sprang to Palekar's defense. While Congress referred to it as "political witch-hunting," AAP referred to it as a "political vendetta."
