A gunman of gangster Chhota Shakeel has been arrested in connection to a murder case, after 25 years, according to a Mumbai Police official.
The apprehended suspect is identified as Laik Ahmed Fida Hussain Sheikh, 50.
"Laik Ahmed Fida Hussain Sheikh (50), shooter of the Chhota Shakeel gang arrested by Pydhonie Police from near Thane railway station on July 28. Sheikh is accused in the murder of a member of the arrested underworld don Chhota Rajan gang," the official said on Friday.
On the evening of April 2, 1997, the accused and his accomplices shot dead Munna Dhari, a member of the arrested underworld don Chhota Rajan gang. According to the source, Sheikh was arrested, at that time, by the police after registering a complaint against him under Sections 302, 34 of the IPC and Sections 3, 25 of the Arms Act.
"After this, the accused was released on bail by a court in the year 1998," the police official added.
The official added that the accused Sheikh went underground in 1998 and did not show up for any court proceedings; as a result, he was declared an absconder.
As per the official, the police tracked down Sheikh's whereabouts and arrested him on Friday after setting up a trap close to Thane Railway Station.
