India is preparing to receive global leaders and dignitaries in New Delhi on September 8, ahead of the forthcoming G-20 summit, which will take place at the 'Bharat Mandapam' location from September 9 to September 10. Over 30 heads of state, high-ranking European Union officials, and invitees from 14 international organizations are anticipated to take part in the summit.
During his recent visit to Indonesia, where he addressed the ASEAN-India summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a series of one-on-one meetings. Meetings with US President Joe Biden, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth stand out. These sessions are likely to focus on critical areas such as the joint manufacture of jet engines in India, the procurement of MQ-9B armed drones, civil nuclear liability agreements, and trade issues.
Due to a positive COVID-19 test, Spain's interim Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, has opted to boycott the G-20 conference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin additionally chose not to attend the summit, maintaining a trend seen in recent international events in the wake of the Ukraine conflict. Similarly, Chinese President Xi Jinping is cancelling the G-20 summit for the first time, albeit the reasons for China's decision are undisclosed.
In preparation for the event, New Delhi boosted security by imposing travel restrictions in the New Delhi area, which has been classified as a "controlled zone," from Thursday night till Sunday.
The African Union's official entry into the G-20 is one of the summit's anticipated highlights, as negotiators are said to have struck an agreement on its membership. Historically, G-20 summits have always finished with a joint statement, in which Indian officials affirm their intention to address any remaining issues by the summit's conclusion.
