New Delhi:
After a month-long settlement at the borders of Delhi, protesting farmers have finally marched into the national capital to hold a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat', pressing for their demands, including a legal assurance for minimum support prices (MSP) on all crops.
Delhi Police Allows 'Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat' at Ramlila Ground
In a significant move, the Delhi Police has granted permission to the farmers to convene at the Ramlila Ground today for the 'Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat'. However, certain conditions have been imposed, including a ban on tractor trolleys and a restriction on the number of protesters not exceeding 5,000.
The gathering, scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm, aims to escalate the opposition against government policies, with a particular focus on MSP and the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations. Led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the protest intends to adopt a resolution, 'Sankalp Patra', outlining strategies against pro-corporate policies and announcing future actions, especially in light of the upcoming general elections.
Traffic Advisory: Police Issue Advisory as Traffic Likely to be Affected in Delhi
In anticipation of the protest, the police have issued an advisory as traffic disruptions are expected in various parts of Delhi and surrounding areas. Major roads and circuits like Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Barakhamba Road, and Connaught Circus are likely to witness congestion due to the farmers' gathering.
Background: Farmers' Arrival at Delhi Borders, Denial of Permission, and Subsequent Events
The farmers, who arrived at the Delhi borders on February 13, faced initial denial of permission to demonstrate at the Ramlila Maidan and were halted at the Punjab-Haryana border by law enforcement. Despite obstacles, their determination remains steadfast, symbolized by their march with trollies filled with ration to sustain their protest.
In the ongoing farmers' protest, heightened security measures have been implemented along the borders of New Delhi, specifically at Gazipur, Shambhu, and Tikri. #FarmersProtest2024 #FarmerProtest #vygr pic.twitter.com/IPnIFqnGNo— Vygr (@Vygrofficial) February 13, 2024
Unwavering Demands: Farm Loan Waiver and Full Implementation
The core demands of the protesting farmers include a legal guarantee for MSP, a farm loan waiver, and the full implementation of the Swaminathan Committee's recommendations. These demands have been reiterated despite the Centre's proposal to procure pulses, maize, and cotton at MSP for five years, which the farmers have rejected.
As the farmers converge for their 'Mahapanchayat' in Delhi, the spotlight remains on their unwavering resolve to secure their rights and welfare in the agricultural sector.
