Did Manipur’s Chief Minister Fuel Violence? Supreme Court Requests Forensic Lab Report

The Supreme Court has directed the government’s forensic laboratory, the CFSL, to submit a report regarding the leaked audio recordings that allegedly feature Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh. A petitioner from the Kuki community claims these tapes suggest that Singh played a role in inciting the violence in Manipur.

At the start of today’s hearing, Justice PV Sanjay Kumar raised a question about whether he should recuse himself from the case, given that he had attended a dinner hosted by the Manipur Chief Minister following his appointment to the Supreme Court. However, in response, Prashant Bhushan, the lawyer representing the petitioner, asserted that there was no reason for Justice Kumar to step aside.

“There is no issue at all,” Mr Bhushan reassured the two-judge bench, which also included Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna. Mr Bhushan, representing the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust, went on to reveal that the non-profit organisation Truth Labs had verified that 93 percent of the leaked audio tapes contained a voice that matched that of Mr Singh.
