Devendra Fadnavis Set to Lead Maharashtra Again

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is all set to takeover the role of Maharashtra's Chief Minister for the third time. The decision, which followed intense deliberations within the BJP core committee, ends days of suspense and firmly establishes Fadnavis at the helm of Maharashtra's next government.

Who will be Maharashtra's next CM

Proposal for Fadnavis’s Appointment

The proposal to reappoint Fadnavis was put forward by former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, appointed as the party’s observer for the Maharashtra legislature meeting. Senior BJP figures, including Sudhir Mungantiwar and Pankaja Munde, quickly endorsed the motion, solidifying Fadnavis's return to the chief minister's post.

Proposal for Fadnavis’s Appointment

A grand swearing-in ceremony is set to take place on Thursday, December 5, at 5 pm at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Fadnavis will take the oath alongside political allies Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), who are expected to be appointed as deputy chief ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to attend the event.

Mahayuti Alliance’s Historic Victory

This political development follows the Mahayuti alliance’s decisive victory in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections. The alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde), and the NCP (under Ajit Pawar's leadership), secured 232 out of 288 seats, positioning it as the dominant force in Maharashtra politics. Despite the overwhelming mandate, the alliance faced challenges in finalising leadership roles, especially after Eknath Shinde's insistence on continuing as chief minister.

The leadership impasse was resolved when Shinde publicly agreed to step aside in favour of party unity. He expressed his readiness to support the decisions of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, clearing the way for Fadnavis's confirmation as the next Chief Minister.

Fadnavis, who is widely regarded as the architect of the BJP's record-breaking success in Maharashtra, played a pivotal role in securing 132 of the 149 seats contested by the party. His return to the chief minister’s office is further endorsed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a crucial ally of the BJP, which strengthens his position within the party.

A Remarkable Political Turnaround

This development marks a remarkable turnaround for Fadnavis, who has been the BJP’s leading face in Maharashtra for many years. His first term as Chief Minister in 2014 was a landmark moment when the BJP formed a coalition government with the undivided Shiv Sena. However, following the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Shiv Sena walked out of the alliance, triggering a political crisis.

A Remarkable Political Turnaround

In the aftermath of the 2019 elections, Fadnavis led a brief government in November 2019 by forming a partnership with Ajit Pawar. Fadnavis took the oath as Chief Minister, with Ajit Pawar as deputy CM. However, this government lasted only 80 hours as Ajit Pawar returned to the NCP, leading to the fall of the government and the rise of Uddhav Thackeray's coalition.

A New Era for Maharashtra’s Politics

Now, nearly four years later, Fadnavis’s return to power signifies a significant shift in Maharashtra's political landscape. With the BJP at the forefront, Maharashtra is set to experience a new phase of governance under Fadnavis’s leadership.
