Heavy Rain Warning in Chennai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rain warnings for the city and its neighbouring areas of Kundrathur, Velachery, and Sholinganallur for the next few hours. It is a small part of a much wider warning issued for several districts of Tamil Nadu due to the resurgence of storms.
Orange and Yellow Alerts for Districts of Tamil Nadu
Based on available data on Friday, the IMD has issued four districts under Orange Alert - Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu. Other districts in Tamil Nadu along with Puducherry have been put on Yellow Alert for October 18, Friday. The weather office predicts isolated heavy rainfall in the region. More intense showers are likely in the coming days, according to the weather office.
A depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts near Puducherry and Nellore early on October 17. According to the latest update from IMD, this weather system has caused heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and South Interior Karnataka.
Flooding and Waterlogging over Chennai
Torrential rains have caused massive waterlogging in different parts of Chennai. Pictures released from the city show streets under knee-deep water, with people wading through roads that are waterlogged. Flooding is reported in various areas and a general hassle-brew.
Disruption of Transport Services
The rains have severely affected public transport. At several places, bus services were suspended and South Railway canceled four express trains, which included the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express. Few domestic flights were also canceled due to sparse passenger movements.
Red Alert for Uthukkottai District
Uthukkottai district has been put on high alert with a red warning for very heavy rain. Orange warning has been issued by the IMD for Thiruttani and Tiruvallur, which will see heavy rains in the next few hours.
More Rain Forecast in Tamil Nadu and Area
Forecast issued by IMD: Heavy falls are to continue over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on October 18, 20 and 21. Rainfall will occur in South Interior Karnataka and parts of Kerala over the next couple of days, and warnings are going on until October 23 for some areas.
