Tamil Nadu Districts Under Orange Alert as Heavy Rain Approaches

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for seven districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on October 17. Several other regions in the state have been placed under a yellow alert for the same day, signaling the likelihood of heavy rainfall.

Depression Over Bay of Bengal Causes Heavy Rains

In its latest update, the IMD reported that a depression over the Bay of Bengal is leading to intense rainfall and localized flooding. The department predicts that the depression will move across northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh, exacerbating weather conditions in these regions.

Tamil Nadu CM Announces Relief Measures

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that efforts to clear water stagnation in most affected areas are ongoing. Additionally, he announced that Amma canteens in Chennai would provide free meals throughout the day to assist those impacted by the rain, particularly low-income and vulnerable groups.

Heavy Rain Expected in Multiple Districts

The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in several districts, including Chengalpattu, Chennai, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram, and Puducherry. The weather department also indicated that parts of southern Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka could experience significant rainfall.

Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Chennai Downpour

According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has intensified the rainfall across South India. Chennai has been particularly affected, with reports of waterlogging in multiple areas. Residents have been seen wading through knee-deep water as several parts of the city remain flooded due to continuous rainfall.

Schools, Colleges, and Transportation Services Affected

The Tamil Nadu government has deployed over 200 boats and disaster response teams to manage the situation. Schools, colleges, and government offices were closed on October 16, and the closure is expected to continue, although no official announcement has been made yet. Bus services in many areas have been disrupted.

Additionally, the Southern Railway cancelled four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogging. Several domestic flights were also cancelled as passengers were unable to reach the airport due to heavy waterlogging across the city.
