The second runway at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport was updated with CAT III technology to make it safer for planes to fly when visibility is low. The goal of this project is to keep traffic from getting backed up and to lessen the bad effects of bad weather on people.
The CAT III enabled Runway 10/28 at the Delhi Airport has been operationalised today. This would ensure further mitigation of weather-related congestion issues. — Jyotiraditya M. Scindia (@JM_Scindia) February 3, 2024
With four running runways, the airport can handle up to 100 million people every year. Additionally, the hubs will be able to accommodate an extra 140 million air travellers each year. Fog delays happen a lot in Delhi, which means that planes are often late or even cancelled. Because of the bad weather, the DGCA has told airlines to cancel any planes that are going to be more than three hours late.
CAT III Technology at Delhi Airport
- A more advanced form of the instrument landing system (ILS) that helps planes land accurately when visibility is low.
- Lowers the chance of mistakes or mistakes made by humans.
- The decision height at Delhi Airport is less than 50 feet, and the runway viewing range is more than 150 feet.
- Implementation on Runway 10/28 makes operations run more smoothly when it's foggy.
- It cuts down on flight delays and cancellations, making the journey easier for passengers.
The addition of CAT III technology to Runway 10/28 has made operations more effective and reduced flight delays and cancellations when it is foggy. People will be more relaxed, and there will be fewer delays because of this change.
