Karnataka’s Former CM SM Krishna Dies at 92

Veteran politician and former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna passed away early on Tuesday at the age of 92 after battling a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 2:45 AM at his residence in Bengaluru, according to family sources. Krishna had been hospitalised in October and died at home.

SM Krishna, a former External Affairs Minister and Karnataka Chief Minister, is remembered for his significant contributions to both state and national politics. He served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 and later as the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.

In addition, he played a key role in India’s foreign policy as External Affairs Minister under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2009 to 2012.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Krishna, highlighting his impactful leadership. “His vision and dedication shaped Karnataka’s progress, and his corporate approach to governance endeared him to many,” Kharge said. He further praised Krishna’s vision of turning Bengaluru into a global city, a legacy that continues to benefit the city today.

A Life of Service

SM Krishna used to live with his wife, Prema, and their two daughters, Shambhavi and Malavika. His family and supporters fondly remember his years of public service. Krishna had a long career in politics, been a member of the Karnataka assembly and council, and serving as Deputy Chief Minister and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

In 2017, after nearly five decades with the Congress party, Krishna made a significant shift and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although he remained relatively low-profile in politics afterward. He retired from active politics in 2023.

Recognition and Awards

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to public life, SM Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2023. Upon receiving the prestigious honour, he expressed his gratitude to the Government of India and the people of Karnataka, saying it would have made his parents proud.Recognition and Awards

A law graduate, Krishna studied in the United States, earning degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Krishna is particularly remembered for his role in positioning Bengaluru as the hub of India's IT industry, earning it the title of “India’s Silicon Valley.” His vision during his tenure as Chief Minister helped transform the city into a global tech leader.
